چکیده

To achieve maximam integrated luminosity at the SLAC Linear Collider, a method of noninvasive beam tuning is required . Traditional luminosity monitors based on Bhabha scattering are inadequate because of low instantaneous counting rates. Coherent deflections of one beam by the electromagnetic field of the other are sensitive not only to the relative steering of the two bunches but also to their spot sizes . A brief description of beam-beam deflection theory forms the basis for a discussion of this phenomenon as a tool for single-beam tuning and for luminosity optimization at the interaction point of the SLC.

Observation of beam-beam deflections at the interaction point of the SLAC Linear Collider.

We report the first direct observation of the electromagnetic deflection of high --energy electron and positron beams as they pass each other with small impact _. -parameters. ‘Measurements of the deflection amplitude are found in agreement with theoretical expectations. This phenomenon, which is sensitive both to the relative position of the two beams and to their transverse sizes, has been us...

-survey of Beam Instrumentation Used in Slc*

A survey of beam instruments used at SLAC in the SLC machine is presented. The basic utility and operation of each device is briefly described. The various beam instruments [l] used at the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC), [2,3] can be classified by the function they perform. Beam intensity, position and size are typical of the parameters of beam which are measured. Each type of parameter is impo...

Orbit Distortion and the Beam - Beam Interaction ∗

We study the applicability of beam-beam deflection techniques as a tuning tool for the SLAC/LBL/LLNL B factory, PEP-II. Assuming that the closed orbits of the two beams are separated vertically at the interaction point by a local orbit bump that is nominally closed, we calculate the residual beam orbit distortions due to the beam-beam interaction. Difference orbit measurements, performed at poi...

First Results from the Final Focus Test Beam*

We have used the Final Focus Test Beam beamline and associated instrumentation to reduce the 46.6 GeV SLAC electron beam to a vertical size of 70 nm. This represents a reduction from the linac beam size by a factor of 320, comparable to the demagnification required by a TeV-scale linear collider, and addresses the same aberrations predicted in such an environment. The beam dimensions were measu...
